Seventh graders study the development and spread of civilizations throughout the Middle Ages. Students study Medieval Europe, the rise of the Islamic civilization, the cultures and kingdoms of West Africa and Japan during the Medieval times, and the civilizations of the Americas. Through the use of texts, primary sources, classroom simulations, historical fiction, writing assignments, art projects, and individual and group research, students will develop their understanding of these particular times in history, along with their understanding of historical and social processes in general. They will also further hone the skills required to do research, work with others, use evidence to support an idea, and analyze the puzzle of history.
To understand human events, students must first understand the characteristics of the places in which those events occurred. This includes both the physical and human characteristics of a place. Through the geography portion of our curriculum, students should learn about the earth’s continents, the significant countries and cities, the dominant landscape features of the earth and the physical and cultural contexts in which these places exist.
