Singing/Instruments
The music program through the elementary years combines music literacy,
appreciation, participation, and performance. As early as Kindergarten,
children begin to learn the value of music in their lives. The music program
expands children’s awareness of many different styles of music,
encourages their appreciation of cultural similarities and differences,
and teaches the basics of rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, composition,
note-reading, and listening skills.
Children participate in a variety of musical experiences, beginning with
singing and simple movements and progressing to chants, rounds, descants,
recorders, guitars, and autoharps. Performances of song and dance several
times during the year give opportunities for children to share what they
have learned with appreciative audiences.
Chorus is available for older children, and instrumental music lessons
are available after school. Our Middle School Band involves a large number
of our older students.
Dance
Dance allows students to train and use their bodies for artistic expressiveness
and for the fun of free and flowing movement. Dance lessons are available
after school one or two days a week, depending on the students’
ages and interests.
Performing Arts
All students have the opportunity to be part of a performance
with their classmates. Through practical theater games and exercises,
including mime, improvisations, movement/dance, memorization, characterization,
storytelling, vocal and physical conditioning, students improve their
dramatic talents. Students thus ready themselves for the challenges of
cooperation and individual effort that makes drama such an effective teaching
tool.
